Consumerism in the gilded age: Stefano Bardini, Master Marketeer with Lynn Catterson

Tuesday, April 4

Andy Warhol is famously quoted as saying "art is anything you can get away with," and 100 years earlier no one knew this better than Stefano Bardini. In 1865 Bardini brilliantly capitalized on the revitalisation of Florence as the capital of the new kingdom and the tremendous amount of art market exposure it provided by marketing 15 century Florentine style objects to newly wealthy American shoppers. The audaciously high market prices his objects commanded increased the buyers’ perception of quality, and no less, authenticity. Bardini recognized the business potential of the recently arriving Gilded Age Americans, who along with their dollars, brought a largely uneducated eye as they sought to emulate European aristocracy. His ability to provide eager customers with displays of wealth regardless of provenance initiates a conversation we continue to have today: what's the real value of authenticity?

Join Lynn Catterson, PhD, author, professor, researcher and our favorite historical sleuth, as she explores Bardini's masterful marketing style and its impact on society then and now.

€20, ticket includes talk and aperitivo.

Tuesday, March 21 - The Milk of Dreams: Curating Contemporary Art in the Face of a Pandemic

This lecture explores last year’s Venice Biennale, The Milk of Dreams with a view toward understanding how the pandemic affected both the process and product of mounting the latest edition of this large-scale, contemporary art exhibition. Organized by New York-based Italian curator Cecilia Alemani, the two-part show, titled after a book by surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, focused on themes ranging from the body and transformation to the unconscious and desire. By exploring surrealism, past and present, through a combination of works by mostly women and non-binary artists, the show juxtaposed dreams and nightmares as a way of reflecting on and moving forward from this fraught moment in history while taking stock of social injustices and other dystopian themes along the way.

Art and the Black Death: Disaster, Despair and Hope

As communities grappled with an invisible enemy, artists have often tried to make sense of the random destruction brought by plagues. Their interpretation of the horrors they witnessed has changed radically over time, but what has remained constant is the artists’ desire to capture the essence of an epidemic.  The 14th century plague significantly affected European culture, the idea of death, and religion. During this time, many artistic representations captured moments of terrible misfortune, sarcasm, and—sometimes—hope. This period often was characterized by death and its many, constantly evolving representations.

Join Renaissance art historian Elaine Ruffolo for a fascinating look at art and society before and after  the plague. She will raise the question, did the disaster help fuel the Renaissance?

Location: Palazzo San Niccolo

Time: 6:30 PM

Cost: 20 euro including drink
