Power Jewels: The Promotion of Political Power

What made Florence one of the most beautiful cities in the world? Sometimes the answer is in the smallest details. The jewelry worn by the mysterious characters in the Primavera by Botticelli or the helmet of Goliath in Donatello's David are keeping secrets that explain the rise and fall of merchant dynasties in Florence during the Renaissance.

This first series of the talk is about the iconic "Seal of Nero", an ancient carnelian cameo owned by Cosimo the Elder, the man who made immortal the name of Medici.
From the Council of Florence in 1439 to the jewelry collections of the Medici, this talk will show the role of precious items, owned by important families in Florence, source of inspiration for the most important Renaissance artists.

This talk is free for Cultural Salon members & patrons

How to Use A Pendulum with Ali Bogner & Marina Calamai

One of the most commonly used tools for divination and dowsing is a pendulum. Scientists and sages have used it for centuries! Come learn their secrets with Ali Bogner & Marina Calamai!.

Pendulums have been used for centuries all over the world by both governments and individuals. In fact, it is known that users of the pendulum include the Vatican, the ancient Egyptians/Romans/Chinese, Leonardo da Vinci, the English during WWII and many others. Albert Einstein even stated, “I know very well that many scientists consider dowsing as they do astrology, as a type of ancient superstition.  According to my conviction this is, however unjustified.  The dowsing rod is a simple instrument which shows the reaction of the human nervous system to certain factors which are unknown to us at this time”

A pendulum works by tapping into your intuition and sixth sense. As the pendulum moves, you gain answers in response to questions – it is best suited to use to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. Many feel it works through activating certain nerve impulses as it sends messages from the subconscious to the conscious mind. Dowsing assumes that EVERYTHING without exception, constantly radiates energy. The pendulum merely allows you to physically see what the intuition already knows. As an extension of the intuition, the pendulum can give you information from the same two sources as the intuition: from your own subconscious mind; and from your higher guidance, spirit, or guardian angel.

While the art of using a pendulum is something that anyone can learn and master, it is important to learn the proper method of asking questions and using the pendulum.

Pendulum dowsing can be used in a variety of different ways, such as:

·       Healing purposes and identifying allergies.

·       To help make all types of decisions

·       To help find various earth energies affecting a home (dowsing rods are often used for this too, which work in a similar way to a pendulum).

·       As a Feng Shui aid to help with placement in the home.

·       As a vehicle to self awareness.

·       Energy Healing

Special visit with the artist! Nam Hong was born and raised in Korea and moved to France many years ago where she has since lived. Her art comes from the ideas of suffering and nurturing and embraces both the cycles of life and death, through some sort of unending collision between passion and decay, fire and ashes, combining Korean shamanic traditions with contemporary Western issues. Why is Florence the Cradle of the Renaissance? with Elaine Ruffolo

Have you ever wondered why Florence is considered the "cradle of the Renaissance"? For hundreds of years the city of Florence nurtured an unceasing succession of great artists including Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael. Find out why no other place can rival Florence for the quantity of first-rate, locally produced works of art, many still in the sites for which they were created or in museums a few hundred yards away.

Tuesday, January 22nd

Time: 18.30

Location: Palazzo San Niccolò, Via San Niccolò 79

Elaine Ruffolo has been teaching art history in Florence since 1989 and is a popular instructor for students and adults alike.  Her special interests include the history of art and patronage in Renaissance Florence.  Elaine firmly believes that the best way to understand a work of art is by exploring the context in which it was made.  What makes art history interesting and relevant today is studying the political situation, economic conditions, patronage, and the artist's personality that is reflected in the work of art.

Elaine currently lectures for university programs in Florence and designs academic travel programs throughout Italy. She is also the Resident Director for the Smithsonian Associate’s Programs in Italy, lectures for National Trust for Historic Preservation, Yale Alumni, College of William and Mary, and the Patrons of the Vatican Museums.  She has been on the advisory board of the Friends of Florence since 2000 and consults for CEO and YPO programs in Europe including Rome, Florence, Sicily, Naples, Greece, Morocco, and Prague and Argentina.
